Auditions

Our auditions are open auditions.  You are welcome to arrive at the starting time of 12 noon if you wish and watch all auditions.  Your booked time is merely to facilitate the auditioning process and to allow those who do not wish to spend all day at auditions to leave.

An audition form is attached.  Please fill it in prior to arriving, attach your typed resume (if you have one) and a recent photograph.  Please arrive at least 5 minutes before your audition time.

Song:

  • Please sing a “show tune” that shows the range of your voice and your ability to “sell” a song.
  • (Please – no current “pop” songs – they do not help us in casting a musical)
  • You may use a backing cd or tape or bring sheet music to be played by our accompanist.

Dance:

  • Many styles of dance are used in Nunsense.
  • Although the dances are meant to look "amateurish", you will need to have at least a little dance experience.
  • Those auditioning for Sister Mary Leo must be able to dance on pointe and will be asked to do so at auditions.
  • There is also a tap routine which most of the nuns take part in.

Acting:

  • You will be asked to do a cold reading from the script.  Accents are American. To download the reading (for all parts) click here.
  • Sister Mary Regina needs to be able to interact with the audience and ad lib where necessary depending on the audience reaction.
  • Sister Robert Anne needs a Brooklyn accent.
  • Sister Mary Amnesia conducts a quiz so must be able to interact with the audience and ad lib where necessary.  She also does a very bad ventriloquist number with a hand puppet nun.

Synopsis

Time:  The present, in New Jersey.  The Little Sisters of Hoboken must raise money to bury the last four sisters of their order who died of botulism from vichyssoise made by Sister Julia.  Mother Superior spent the money on a plasma tv for the convent. The remaining dead sisters are presently at rest in the convent freezer.  The nuns are allowed to perform a show to raise the needed money at the Mount Saint Helen's School Auditorium where the eighth grade students are currently presenting “Grease” provided they do not interfere with the “Grease” set.
